Job Title: Certified Health & Physical Education Teacher, Benhaven Academy


Reports To: Academy Director


Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8 am-3:30 pm (37.5 hours)


Purpose of Position:

This is a full-time, 37.5-hour-per-week, 12-month exempt position. The Certified Health and Physical Education Teacher works under the Academy Director's direction. The Certified Health and Physical Education Teacher provides small groups of students with adapted physical education instruction that meets their physical needs and goals. The teacher also provides health instruction to students with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder and related social-emotional needs. The teacher promotes physical fitness, health literacy, personal wellness, and healthy lifestyle choices while ensuring a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment.

This position is assigned the following duties. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide group instruction to students diagnosed with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder and challenges related to anxiety and social competence.
  • Must display a positive attitude and high levels of enthusiasm in supporting students’ learning as well as creativity and collaboration.
  • The ability to build relationships.
  • Develop and deliver health education curriculum aligned with Connecticut State Standards, including topics such as nutrition, personal wellness, mental health awareness, substance abuse prevention, personal safety, and healthy decision-making.
  • Adapt health and physical education instruction to meet the individual learning, behavioral, social-emotional, and physical needs of students.
  • Collaborate with classroom teams to support students' health, safety, and wellness needs.
  • Maintain awareness of student medical conditions, allergies, physical limitations, and emergency health plans to ensure safe participation in physical activities.
  • Implement appropriate accommodations and modifications in accordance with student IEPs, behavioral support plans, and medical recommendations.
  • Monitor student participation and physical well-being during activities and respond appropriately to health and safety concerns.
  • Promote lifelong healthy habits through instruction in physical fitness, nutrition, stress management, and personal wellness.
  • Ensure all physical education equipment and activity spaces are maintained in a safe, organized, and sanitary condition.
  • Participate in PPT meetings, multidisciplinary team meetings, and professional development activities as needed.
  • Support school-wide initiatives related to student wellness, health promotion, and social-emotional learning.

 

Required License/Certifications

  • CT Educational Certification (044)

Preferred, But Not Required

  • CT Educational Certification (043)
  • CPR

Experience and Skill Requirements:

  • Must be able to pass a variety of background checks
  • Must be able to prepare lesson plans.
  • Maintain inventory of instructional equipment, materials, etc.
  • Must be able to work as part of a team in a person-centered supportive environment
